Humor

I wrote most of these (or collaborated on them with my fellow Saucers R. Jay Magill and Bill Coleman) for The Saucepot Review (SPR). I like to write more humor but it’s really hard.

“The Higher Learning: A Survey”

This one started as a reaction to a piece in Harvard Magazine. It was later published in Jest magazine.

“Jesse Jackson’s Third Act”

In January of 2001 a story broke that Jesse Jackson had fathered a child out of wedlock. I wrote a send-up of him as a Shaft-esque private eye. Probably not a very fair attack on the guy, but that’s satire, I guess.

Colbert Report Submission

R. Jay knew a guy at The Colbert Report who encouraged him to submit something for the show. This is what we came up with. We thought it was good but the producers declined.

“Ken Burns’ Cheeseburger

Another SPR bit. If my memory is correct, Bill wrote most of this one.

“A Guide to Our Lesser-Known Patriots”

This one includes some great illustrations by R. Jay.

“Second Thoughts”

An imagined correspondence between Admiral John Poindexter and William Safire regarding “Total Information Awareness.” As Bill said, “It’s hilarious but there are probably five people on Earth who will think it’s funny.” Maybe you’re one of the five.

“The MacArthur Associates”

Some also-rans from the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowships. This one is for anyone who’s ever come in 4th place.
